WE BRING THE BENEFITS OF NATURE TO PEOPLE.

COWICHAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL
The landscape design of the new Cowichan District Hospital plays a vital role in supporting sustainability and patient well-being by integrating native plantings, green infrastructure, and restorative outdoor spaces. Thoughtfully designed healing gardens, accessible walking paths, and natural stormwater management features enhance biodiversity, reduce heat island effects, and improve water efficiency. These landscapes not only contribute to the hospital’s LEED Gold® certification but also create a welcoming, therapeutic environment that fosters community connection and holistic healing.

Project Spotlight
North Island College
Student Residencies
Nestled in the heart of the K’ómoks Valley in Courtenay, British Columbia, this innovative student housing project embodies a profound connection with its natural surroundings. The design draws inspiration from the valley's serene waters, lush forests, and the majestic K’ómoks Glacier that graces the horizon. By seamlessly integrating these elements, the campus offers students an immersive experience that celebrates the beauty and vitality of the local landscape.

THE ROTUNDA
The project is a AA LEED™ Platinum office and retail building, and MDI's design work was focused on extending the high-quality, sustainable design into the public realm and streetscape.
The public spaces are carefully detailed pedestrian amenities that support the new development in bringing vitality and energy to the area. The streetscape was designed with a 'complete streets' approach and incorporates planting areas designed to support stormwater management of building and road runoff, large trees that will contribute significantly to the downtown urban forest, and separation of pedestrians and cyclists from vehicles.

2950 JUTLAND RD
The waterfront side of the building includes several unique rainwater management features and naturalized plantings, including a series of rainwater cisterns that collect water from the roof and power a rain fountain. All the stormwater from the site is managed in rain gardens along the waterfront that double as a vegetated screen between residential patios and the public waterfront walkway.
